Ka ‘ili hau pa kai o ‘Alio - The hau bark, wet by the sea sprays of ‘Alio

Known mainly for its yellow flower in bloom, the Hau bush (or Hau Ka'eka'e) spreads its thick growth near the ocean shore and along the river side.  The 'Olelo No'eau references a place on Kaua'i where the Hau flourishes and is strengthened by the salt air and sea sprays, making it known as the strong shore dweller.  It's bark is used for cordage in the making of fishing nets and canoes, as well as hula skirts and slingshots.  It is part of the Hibiscus family.

Designed by a local Kaua'i artist, Maile Miyake.
